Chapter Fifteen

Amp’s iPad was propped up on his desk. For a change, I was the one sitting in his desk chair, FaceTiming with Bean. Amp and Claire crowded onto on the couch with Zoey. I stared into the screen at Bean.

She sat in what had been the children’s room of the old library. I recognized the wing chair and the leaded glass windows. Those windows had seemed magical when I was little, castle windows, something out of the fairy tales on the shelves beneath them.

“I should have been there with you.” Bean bit her knuckle. “I feel bad. Zak and I are trying to be careful. By Sunday it ought to be safe enough if we’re still fine…. “ She sighed. “I know this is going to sound woo-woo, but what’s in your heart? That’s often all you get with this stuff. Do you believe the note was truly from your brother? There could be all kinds of reasons for what happened.”

I played with a lock of my hair. “Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe someone wanted to freak me out, like a lot. Or maybe not. Let’s say the note wasn’t a fake. So Jack is still with us. I think his heart is good, if that’s what you mean. I guess he could have sent me a heads-up note. But why would it explode?”

Zoey took a breath as if she was going to say something—but she stayed quiet.

I looked down at my lap and shuddered: the jeans. “And I’m thinking I need to go change out of these jeans. Like right now. Yikes.”

Claire got up and stood behind me, crouching into the picture on the screen. “It was so weird, Bean. I was cleaning out a drawer in Mike’s old room, looking for bits of fabric. The last of my scraps and remnants were in that drawer—and there were the jeans, buried underneath. Untouched since the 80’s, it looked like. I mean, I guess it’s possible. I’m truly not into the Marie Condo stuff.” She giggled, but it sounded forced.

I felt Amp’s eyes on me. “Grace—let me get a good look at those.” Light from the desk lamp flashed on his glasses. “Stand up, will you?”

“I gotta go change, Amp.”

“Hang out one minute. Claire, remember when we saw The Dead at Madison Square? You wore those jeans that night. Now I’m positive. They were your fancy pair. You’d just bought them. Remember that tall guy with the security guard chasing him down the aisle? He was sloshing his beer all over the place and some got on your new jeans? You were so mad! Happened right after ‘Morning Dew?’”

“Oh, yeah. They were so much fun to dance in.” Claire smiled and Amp grabbed the end of her long, silver braid. They were adorable together sometimes. And the jeans probably would be fun to dance in. But I suddenly wanted to be rocking pretty much anything else except them.

“Deadheads!” Zoey made the peace sign and Amp laughed.

“The Dead … at MSG.
